Here's what was the hot mooting news for the 2001-2002 mooting season:
- ESU - Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competition -
The University of Southampton is the winner of this year’s
ESU - Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competition.
Jodie Mittell and Eleanor Fargin mooted on behalf of Southampton
and narrowly beat Peter Ratliff and Tom Gosling of
Sheffield University in what was described as an exciting final
at a new venue for the competition - the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

A record number of universities entered the competition,
which is celebrating its 30th final this year.
Three judges presided over Southampton's victory - The Hon Mr Justice Thomas, Michael Thomas QC and
Lord Steyn who commented: "Persuasion not aggression is the key to
good advocacy. In judging this competition we looked for
natural talent combined with a trained structured approach,
demonstrating sound research and a practised delivery.
The team from Southampton met this criteria and deserved to be the winner."
- Midland Universities Mooting Competition -
Kate Tompkins and Ian Kelt of Sheffield University won the 2002 Midland Universities
Mooting Competition in the final held in April.
- Weekly Law Reports Mooting Competition -
Tom Beasley and Richard Jones of City University were victorious in the final of the Weekly
Law Reports first national competition, held on 26 April. City, acting as
respondents, narrowly beat Henni Ouahes and Nicholas Frey of St. Hugh's College, Oxford in a moot judged by
David McIntosh, President of The Law Society.
There was stiff competition from the University of Lincoln and University of Hertfordshire
in the semi-finals. 27 universities have taken part in the contest.
- Blackstones Mooting Competition -
The City University team of Antonio Zaccarhaeus and Joseph Goldsmith
have won the Blackstones competition, narrowly beating the
Lincoln University team of Paul Verrico and Peter Ward
in the final on 6 July. Stuart Brown Q.C. judged the final, which was held at Lincoln.
The winners receive cheques of £750 and the runners up £500.
- Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition -
The University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa have defeated the University of
Western Australia to win the final Championship Round of this year's
Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
The 43rd annual final was held in March in Washington, DC.
386 universities from 65 countries participated in the Jessup Competition this year, and
75 teams from 62 countries participated in the international rounds.
- European Law Moot Court -
Inner Temple have reached the Grand Final of the European Law Moot Court for the second
consecutive year. The 2002 team, composed of Emma Lindsay, Lydia Sweeney and Mark Vinall,
competed against three other teams at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The
competition winner was the University of Maastricht.
- Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot -
The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot has had a record 108 universities
enter in 2002. The competition finals were held in Vienna in March.
The Inner Temple team of Noel Dilworth, Ruth Jordan, Oliver Wellings and Carsten Zatschler
made it through to the final 8 teams before being knocked out by the University
of Cologne.
Noel Dilworth and Oliver Wellings won Honourable Mentions as individual speakers.
The University of Singapore mooted against the University of Queensland in the 2002 grand final.
Napier University from Scotland also entered a team into the Willem C Vis competition, as did
King's Inns from Dublin, who were knocked out by Inner Temple in their last moot.
- Inner Temple Inter Varsity Mooting Competition -
David Comb and Matthew Nicholson of Sheffield University have won the 2002 Inner Temple
Inter Varsity Mooting Competition. This was the third time the competition
has been run, and a total of 20 universities took part. The final was held on 16 February 2002.
- Negotiation Competition -
Paul Verrico and Peter Ward of Lincoln University won the fifth annual final of the Negotiation Competition in March.
Other top teams came from Kingston, Cambridge and City Universities.
In the competition, teams of two students from each university have to negotiate two scenarios set in a legal context in each round.
Lincoln's team will now go on to represent England and Wales in the international competition
to be held in Kingston upon Thames in July.

- Telders International Mooting Competition -
Abigail Cooles, Tamara Pawson, Lee Dixon and Pete Beisty won the national round of
the Telders International Mooting Competition in February.
The team from Hull University will go on to compete after Easter in
the international round of the competition held at the International Court of Justice in the Peace Palace in the Hague.
